Study Abroad Program FAQ

What Will I Learn While Traveling Abroad?

Before you begin your course of study, you will learn how to plan your travel for the program, design additional travel before, during and after your course of study.  Open to all majors, this course is an introduction to international politics with an emphasis on the economic, political, and military aspects of international relations.  You will learn from many lecturers, not just one, unlike the usual American format.  You will keep a daily journal, focusing on your interpretation of the material presented, take midterm and final exams, and learn through excursions with experienced guides about key cultural centers and attractions (Oxford, Cambridge, London, Bath, Windsor Palace)

Is this a chaperoned program?

Since you must be 18 to participate in this program, you will not be “chaperoned” during your trip or course of study.  As an adult in Britain, you will be subject to British law, let alone your own good common sense.  Most Colleges and Universities have their own student codes of conduct which also apply to study abroad.  Professors and staff will be available to inform and guide you about local customs, transportation, and points of interest.  Certified guides will accompany you on all program excursions.  It is expected that your group will bond and work together to take care of one another in a “buddy system.”

Where Will I live While Abroad?

When you arrive at Oxford, you will proceed to the Oxford Study Abroad Programme Office at 21-27 George St. (a short walk from the Gloucester Green bus station) to pick up your keys and information packet.  You will stay in student housing–usually in a shared townhouse within walking distance of class.  Each townhouse has a kitchen, laundry facilities, internet, and TV.  You will have a number of grocery stores to choose from, or if you prefer to eat in pubs or coffee shops (a common choice), you can do that as well.

How Do I Apply?

You can apply directly to the Oxford Study Abroad Programme International Relations Programme here: osapabroad.com/ir  This is also where you can view more about the academic program, see a sample syllabus, as well as a Youtube video of the Oxford Experience.  In fact, it’s a very good idea to put in your application as soon as possible to indicate your interest, and get on the staff’s radar screen.   If you are a college student, you will need to send a copy of your current transcripts before you can be accepted.  All majors can apply, and you will need at least a C average to qualify.

How Much Does It Cost?

The cost of the program is $4,850.00.  This includes academic instruction, lodging, laundry and internet facilities, all program-related bus excursions, a welcome reception, and a boat trip down the River Thames with a member of the House of Lords.    The cost is lower than most study abroad programs of similar duration because the Oxford Study Abroad Program has acquired its own housing over a period of 25 years.   The cost does not include airfare, food costs, or any travel you choose to take before, during, or after the designated dates of July 4 through July 29, 2023.   Do consider this fee  as an important investment in your future.

Do I Earn College Credits?

For an additional fee, you can receive a transcript with your grade from the Oxford Study Abroad Program for purposes of course credit at your home community college or University.  You must, however, clear with your own school, preferably before you come to Oxford, if they can or will accept course credit.  From our experience, most institutions will accept 3 units of course credit from the Oxford Study Abroad Programme.  When you arrive at Oxford, you should engage with staff to facilitate course credit.
